Year 9 and 10 pupils from Bishop Vaughan and Pentrehafod secondary schools recently took part in the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) exciting ‘Next Steps’ event at the SA1 campus. Now in its second year, the programme ran over five days, with different schools attending each day to explore careers in construction, engineering, and health and social care. The programme is generously supported by the South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership.
The event supports the Curriculum for Wales by helping young people become ambitious, capable learners and informed citizens, ready to plan for their futures. Through a series of hands-on, interactive workshops, pupils discovered a range of roles and progression pathways in these vital industries.
Activities included using engineering tools, experiencing healthcare scenarios, and learning about modern construction techniques. Learners also had opportunities to speak with university staff, students, and industry experts to better understand the skills and qualifications needed for different careers.
The experience was both fun and informative, sparking enthusiasm and curiosity about future study and employment. Staff praised the event for raising aspirations and helping pupils see real-world connections between their learning and future opportunities. Pupils left feeling inspired and more confident about their next steps.
