Twelve students from Bishopston Comprehensive School recently took part in a dynamic and hands-on work experience week, delivered in collaboration with AtkinsRéalis, Gower College Swansea, Careers Wales and the My Choice Swansea. The programme offered students a valuable introduction to careers in construction, engineering and the wider built environment.
The week began with a focus on quantity surveying and site experience, led by Dewi Wood, Graduate Quantity Surveyor at Kier. Students learned about career pathways into the profession before taking part in an interactive activity that tested their communication, maths and problem-solving skills. The day concluded with a guided site tour of the Gower College Extension project.
Midweek, students visited Gower College Swansea for a taster day, exploring multiple campuses and gaining insight into the wide range of academic and vocational routes available after Year 11. This was followed by a visit to the AtkinsRéalis Swansea office, where students tackled an engineering challenge and learned about apprenticeships, graduate schemes and trainee opportunities from the Emerging Talent Team.
The final day returned students to site, where they took part in practical plumbing and electrical activities delivered by Mitie, before an informative site walk led by Kier’s Assistant Site Manager.
The week provided a meaningful, real-world learning experience, helping students build confidence, broaden aspirations and better understand future career opportunities.
