Year 9 pupils from schools across Swansea took part in an engaging debating bootcamp as they attended the launch of a new debating competition organised through Seren. Held in the council chambers at the Guildhall, Swansea, the event brought together students in a professional and inspiring environment to begin developing the core skills of effective debate.
Pupils from Bryn Tawe, Gŵyr, Bishop Vaughan, Pontarddulais, Olchfa and Bishop Gore schools took part in the bootcamp, which introduced them to the fundamentals of debating. Students explored how to structure arguments, present ideas clearly, listen actively to opposing viewpoints and respond with confidence – all essential elements of successful debate.
The bootcamp placed a strong emphasis on communication skills that are crucial for the world of work. By learning how to speak persuasively, think critically and collaborate with others, pupils gained valuable experience that will support them in future education and employment. Employers increasingly value strong communication and teamwork skills, and debating provides an ideal platform to develop these at an early stage.
Set within the formal surroundings of the Guildhall council chambers, the event offered pupils a unique and memorable introduction to debating, while equipping them with lifelong skills that extend well beyond the classroom.
