The partnership between Careers Wales, the Probation Service and Morriston Comprehensive School has proven to be highly beneficial for all organisations and the students involved. This collaboration aimed to highlight career paths in the probation sector and to engage Year 11 pupils in discussions about the effects of crime on society, a theme of their Public Services course
One of the key activities was a workshop led by the Probation Service. During this session, an insightful overview of the Probation Service, its role within the criminal justice system, and the various career opportunities available was delivered. Pupils were then presented with a case study of a young probation service user. The pupils analysed their background and the services involved in his case, such as solicitors, prison and probation, youth justice service, youth offending team, and social services . This exercise encouraged pupils to use their critical thinking and analytical skills, fostering empathy and understanding of the impact of crime .
The Teacher involved in the session commented;
“The employer engagement service that I have been receiving from Careers Wales has truly enhanced the learning experience for my Public Service students. The sessions and support the service has provided since I started teaching this at Morriston Comprehensive school have been outstanding and genuinely feel that they have helped students to see the relevance of the topics and the skills they are covering throughout the course. Seeing the skills being talked about by the public services we have had in school and the opportunities available to them have been very motivating and beneficial for the students who want a deeper understanding of that service. I have seen students make connections with their written work and they have been able to include some of the information into their assignments which would not have been possible without the session”.
The key outcomes of this partnership included increased awareness of the criminal justice system, enhanced critical thinking skills, and inspiration for potential careers in the sector. The collaboration also promoted empathy and compassion among pupils, helping them understand the importance of rehabilitation.
