Opening Doors: Swansea teachers take part in city centre walking tour of businesses

Teachers from across Swansea took part in an inspiring city centre walking tour of businesses, gaining first-hand experience of local industries to help embed Careers and Work-Related Experiences (CWRE) into the curriculum.

The tour included exclusive behind-the-scenes visits to Swansea Arena, Morgan’s Hotel, Y Storfa construction site, and Tramshed Tech, giving participants valuable insights into the creative, digital, hospitality, and construction sectors. Each stop showcased how pupils could benefit from real-world learning experiences linked to classroom topics.

At Swansea Arena, teachers explored how geography, history, and music could be brought to life through interactive workshops. One attendee said, “I really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes at the Arena — there were so many things that could adapt to us in business, digital media, and performing arts.” Another added, “The Arena particularly can cater to primary schools, which I will definitely explore further.”

The visit to Morgan’s Hotel proved equally popular. “It was brilliant to see how pupils could engage in real-life experiences like working behind reception, making brownies, and preparing mocktails” said one participant.

Teachers also valued the opportunity to meet local employers and make lasting connections. “Most courses you sit and are spoken at,” said one attendee, “but being able to meet professionals who want to work with you and get their contact details made it much easier to move forward.”

Many described the event as “eye-opening, inspiring, and extremely valuable.” Another teacher commented, “The tour exceeded my expectations — it sparked many ideas for local trips and classroom links.”

The day highlighted the exciting developments happening across Swansea and the vast potential for schools and businesses to collaborate — ensuring learners are inspired by the world of work right on their doorstep.
