Engaging Pupils in Careers and STEM at Townhill Community School
Andrew Scott has been actively engaging with Townhill Community School through a series of interactive careers and STEM sessions, designed to raise pupils’ aspirations and showcase opportunities within the built environment.
Session 1: Design and Build Challenge
The first session introduced pupils to the role of an architect through a “spaghetti and marshmallow tower” challenge. Working collaboratively in teams, pupils were tasked with designing and constructing the tallest possible structure. This activity encouraged the development of key skills including communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, while also providing an insight into the design and build process.
Session 2: Careers Awareness Activity
In the second session, pupils took part in a careers card matching exercise. They were required to match job role images with the correct descriptions, helping to broaden their understanding of the wide range of roles available within the construction industry.
Session 3: Practical Bricklaying Experience
The third session focused on trade skills, with a hands-on bricklaying activity. Pupils worked in teams to learn and practise different bricklaying bonds, gaining a practical introduction to construction trades.
Next Steps
To further enhance their learning experience, all pupils will be visiting the Townhill Community School extension project, currently being delivered by Andrew Scott, in the coming weeks. This site visit will provide a valuable opportunity to see the construction in action.
