The Swansea Seren Year 9 Debating Final, held at the Guildhall, was a vibrant celebration of young people’s critical thinking and communication skills. The event brought together talented learners from schools across Swansea for a full day of structured debates in both Welsh and English. After an energetic series of rounds, Olchfa School emerged as the overall winners of the English Language Final, with Gwyr School taking well‑deserved runners‑up position following a strong performance throughout the day.
Judging for the English competition was provided by representatives from Red Kite Solicitors, who generously supported the event and also delivered an engaging talk on the importance of effective communication skills in the workplace. Their message highlighted how clear, confident expression is central to thriving in modern professional environments and resonated strongly with the learners.
The day offered valuable opportunities for students to develop their reasoning, teamwork and public speaking, while showcasing the impressive standard of debating across Swansea’s schools. Congratulations to all the teams who took part, and especially to Olchfa and Gwyr for their fantastic achievements. The event once again demonstrated the power of debating to inspire confidence, curiosity and lifelong skills in young people.
